Stern Grove Festival—SF’s Best Summer Series

July 21, 2017

The Stern Grove Festival Series

San Francisco has a number of festivals throughout the year—though some are expensive, others sell out before you’ve even planned your SF trip, or they’re free, but so crowded that you’d rather not be squished like a sardine. Not to worry, we have a recommendation for you! If you’re visiting SF and looking for free, live music with iconic bands and artists, the Stern Grove Festival is where you should go. Celebrating its 80th season, Stern Grove is back every Sunday until August 27th with concerts at 2pm.

Since 1938, Stern Grove Festival has held free performing arts shows with the idea that the arts should be accessible to a diverse public. It’s run entirely off of donations—more than $3 million a year. This budget has brought in iconic acts like OK Go, Anita Baker, The Family Stone, George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic, Janelle Monáe, tUnE-yArDs, and many more.

In addition to the music, it’s a great place to relax on your SF vacation. It’s a sitting-style festival, where most of the audience is on picnic blankets and such. You can bring food and drinks in or partake in fare from well-known food trucks and local vendors. The festival is incredibly family friendly, too, with kid’s activities. If you or your family is tired from the hikes, museum explorations, and other San Francisco excursions, it’s the perfect place to unwind. Now that we’ve piqued your interest in Stern Grove, here’s a list of upcoming shows that you can plan your trip around!
